Collection: Rod - Drill - Silversteel - W-1 Water Hardening

For punches dies and high strength machine parts. Unhardened - requires heat treatment.
High abrasion resistance and high toughness when hardened. 100 percent machinability.
Requires heat treating to harden.
Small diameters may not be perfectly straight.
Refer engineering guides online for W-1 hardening requirements.

Silversteel is a popular type of drill-rod that can be water hardened.

Hardening

  • Heat slowly to between 760 and 800°C. The upper temperature should be used for lower carbon content and the lower temperature range for higher carbon content.
  • Austenitise until the temperature is uniform and quench into well-agitated water.
  • Approximate quench hardness is 65 to 69 Rc.

Tempering.

  • Temper immediately after hardening, preferably before the reaching room temperature.
  • Temper for a minimum of 1 hour at temperatures between 180 - 350°C, depending on the final hardness required.
